Goh Chan Lau (five storey bungalow in Hokkien) at No.11, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah was originally the first five-storey residence in Penang built in the 1880s. It later became a hotel and two times as a girls' school before it was leased to Shih Chung Branch School in 1938. The landlord sold Goh Chan Lau in 1994 and it has not been occupied, developed or restored since. At one point of time it was a car park and it has also gone through a severe fire which left it in its current sad state.
With the inscription of Georgetown as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, there might still be hope for this colonial beauty. Even so, on this 20th Anniversary of the Graduating Class of '88 I wish to preserve bits and pieces of my beloved alma mater, and me, as much as I can, lest we all fade into oblivion.
Shih Chung Branch School has relocated to Sungai Nibong since 1995.
